effyeahmicrobiology:

Stem cells made from mature cells and rewound to an embryonic-like state retain a distinct “memory” of their past that might limit their potential for therapeutic use, scientists reported Wednesday in the journal Nature.

(not really “microbiology” but I thought it was a very interesting article, and excruciatingly relevant to the current scientific and political environment)

What are these?

These are human embryonic stem colonies. The long, black cells weaving in-between the speckled looking clumps are mouse skin cells, which anchor the cells to any surface and provide some nutrition for the growing colonies. The speckled looking clumps (to be unscientific) are colonies of individual human embryonic stem cells.

On the legislation front, the newly proposed GOP cuts in Congress will spare the NIH from slashing.

What does this mean for you?

Money drives everything…stem cell research, especially. While the GOP managed to find $1 billion in cuts through other programs, it seems that stem cell programs are mostly spared. This will allow for accelerated research using stem cell technologies, finding therapies for debilitating diseases like diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and cancer.
